Request for University Employees Who Wish to Apply for Permission to Engage in Side Jobs

Tohoku University faculty and staff are required to obtain prior permission from the University when accepting side jobs besides their main educational activities (main duties). Side jobs (second jobs) are defined such as assignment of a committee member of a different organization; working as a part-time lecturer at colleges or high schools; or as a teacher offering special knowledge at civil companies. In such cases, whether remuneration is provided or not, they must be reported and gain prior permission.

AIMR members who wish to accept side jobs are required to follow the procedures described in the charts below:

When to submit request for side jobs One to two months ahead of the desired date of permission to do side jobs.
Answer to request Electronic data of permit will be sent. If data is unneeded, notify the person-in-charge.

Points to note

  • As a basic rule, faculty members hired for discretionary labor will be able to do side jobs outside of their fixed working hours.
  • The period allowed will be within 2 years. (For faculty members who are hired for a fixed term by law will be allowed to do side jobs for a maximum period of 5 years.)
  • The time allowed to engage in side jobs is 15 hours per week or 45 hours per month. (For director of a department whose work exceeds 8 hours per week or 32 hours per month) and upon that whereas his total remuneration exceeds the amount of his annual salary, judgement by the university examination committee will be necessary.

2. Side jobs as an Executive member

Pertinent side jobs Doing side jobs as an executive member of a profit-making enterprise will be allowed only for the following cases:
  • Executive member of a Technology License Organization (TLO) (excludes position as an auditor)
  • Executive member of an enterprise utilizing research results (excludes position as an auditor)
  • Auditor of an incorporate or limited liability company
  • Outside board director of an incorporate
