Geometry and polymer composite and porous materials: from mechanical response to magneto-mechanical actuation

Abstract
Geometry governs the response of materials at almost all scales. In this talk, I will discuss recent results in the context of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) and 3D-printable porous polymers and metals. Specifically, MREs are soft polymer materials comprising random dispersions of micron-sized magnetizable particles and thus may deform upon application of a magnetic field or change their magnetization when deformed. When an MRE film is placed upon a passive substrates one can create surface patterns (such as wrinkles and crinkles) by applying combined magnetic and mechanical fields. The same type of materials may be programmed to deform in certain ways that allow for soft robotic applications. The second part of my talk deals with designing a wide range of random geometries allowing to create composite polymers (or metals) that can be 3D-printed with enhanced mechanical properties. We show that randomness can be beneficial in impact absorption response and fracturing.

Seminars are presented by AIMR researchers and visiting scientists who provide a wide range of hot topics from materials science to mathematics. The aims of the AIMR Seminar are to build up mutual understanding, communication, and discussions of each other’s research fields.
Weekly held Friday Tea Time is where AIMR researchers and staff members can relax and talk freely while drinking coffee. Expectations of stimulating conversation may arise among the researchers and leading to new research.
From 2024, active fusion research through synergistic effects from AIMR Seminars and Friday Tea Time will be promoted.
