Laboratories of the Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University

AIMResearch is an online and print publication highlighting the scientific achievements and activities of top researchers at Tohoku University’s Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR) — a World Premier International (WPI) Research Center established with the support of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT) to lead interdisciplinary research on new and innovative functional materials. AIMResearch highlights the most important findings from among the hundreds of research papers produced by AIMR researchers each year, and presents news roundups and in-depth spotlights on the AIMR’s activities and research groups.

The AIMR brings together internationally renowned researchers from Japan and abroad to work collaboratively on technologies at the vanguards of materials science. Under the direction of Institute Director Motoko Kotani, the AIMR advances research in four areas through its Bulk Metallic Glasses, Materials Physics, Soft Materials and Device/Systems Construction research groups, along with a newly added Mathematics Unit. By adopting a flexible and progressive management structure, the AIMR actively promotes further collaboration, boosted by mathematics, among these research groups toward the development of breakthrough technologies that cross the boundaries of conventional fields of study, bridging the disciplines of materials science, physics, chemistry and precision, mechanical, electronics, and information engineering.

Coinciding with Tohoku University’s 100th year since foundation, the AIMR was inaugurated in 2007 under the Japanese Government’s World Premier International Research Center initiative (WPI), and now hosts about 120 leading researchers (about half of researchers from abroad), including 31 Principal Investigators responsible for spearheading research and forging international collaborations with the world’s most influential institutions. In addition to the research hub at Tohoku University, the AIMR collaborates with research centers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the United States and China, and maintains close ties with many other universities through its Adjunct Professor and Associate Professor programs.
